Sutra Books and Resources

Light on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
B.K.S. Iyengar

NOTE - we will use this as our base reference as most members have this.
What our group members have to say:

Randy - Great base resource.  I have heard it described as not what the sutras meant to him (B.K.S. Iyengar) but what they could mean to us.  Not only is this the “base” resource for the group, but if someone were to ask me which sutra book to get, this would be the first one.

Bill - The translations can be dense at times but his analysis and comments bring everything into focus.

The Science of Yoga
I.K. Taimni
What our group members have to say:

Randy - This is another great resource.  Taimni has an interesting take on the sutras.  I believe his background as a chemist provides a unique perspective that links modern science to the sutras.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Edwyn Bryant
What our group members have to say:

Tom - This is a university-level text, an encyclopedic presentation of the results of long and scholarly study by a respected professor of Indian Philosophy. It is not an easy read, but is a valuable reference for any serious student of Patanjali’s Yoga.

Yoga the Art of Integration
Rohit Mehta
What our group members have to say:

Randy - Rohit is often unique in his views as compared to other commenters.  His comments are often provocative and his writing is truly lovely.  His commentary, in my opinion, is like poetry.

The Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali: A New Translation and Commentary
Georg Feuerstein
What our group members have to say:

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Swami Satchidananda Saraswati
What our group members have to say:

Randy - This is a very accessible translation and commentary on the sutras.  It is a great resource for someone new to the subject.  Although the commentary is often sparse, it is frequently done with beautiful analogies.

Yoga Philosophy of Patanjali:
Containing His Yoga Aphorisms with Vyasa's Commentary in Sanskrit and a Translation with Annotations Including Many Suggestions for the Practice of Yoga
Swami Hariharananda Aranya (Author), P. N. Mukherji (Translator)
What our group members have to say:

Randy - This is an excellent resource in that it provides you a translation of the sutras AND the accompanying translation of Vyasa’s Bhasya as well as comments from Hariharananda.  This is not the easiest resource and comes across as very scholarly.

Light on Vyasa Bhashya (on Patanjali Yog Sutras)
Prashant Iyengar
What our group members have to say:

Randy - This, in my opinion, is not a book for the beginner, however, I find this to be one of my cherished and valued resources.  Prashantji’s commentary is not so much on the sutra as it is on Vyasa’s bhasya.

What our group members have to say:

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Kofi Busia
NOTE - This is not a book but a website.  Click the title above to go to the site.
What our group members have to say:

Randy - Although this is just a translation of the actual sutras, in other words there is no commentary, it is a wonderful resource.  Kofi’s translations in and of themselves shed light on some of the densest sutras.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: The Book of the Spiritual Man
Charles Johnston
What our group members have to say:

Tom - This is a slim volume, with short interpretive texts on each of the sutras.

Yoga Darsana Sutras of Patanjali with Bhasya of Vyasa
Ganganatha Jha
What our group members have to say:

The Yoga Philosophy:
Being the Text of Patanjali, with Bhoja Raja's Commentary; with their translations in English by Dr. Ballantyne and Govind Shastri Deva, an introduction by Col. Olcott and an Appendix
Revised, Edited and Reprinted for the Bombay Theosophical Publication Fund BY
Tookaram Tatya, F.T.S
What our group members have to say:

Randy - This is an interesting translation of Patanjali with Bhoja Raja’s almost exactly 1,000 year old commentary.  Some very interesting individuals contributed to this effort.  Not a super easy to understand resource.
